Honoring Heroes, Hats and Causes HEROIC HANDBAGS The competition was fierce at the Omni Hotel — but all in good fun when Heroes for Children hosted the ninth annual Heroes and Handbags brunch and auction, themed "Under the Big Top." Ladies bid for a chance to get their paws on the perfect arm candy: dazzling totes from Saint Laurent, Zac Posen, Tory Burch, Valentino and Chloé. Chairman Andrea Weber — alongside honorary chairman Tina Craig, the Bag Snob herself — welcomed a fashionable crew that included Kim Bannister, Stacie Hampton, Lisa Troutt, Karen Lukin, Michelle Scott, Haley Dale, and Sarah Conway. Guests perused the purses up for grabs, then headed into the dining room, where festivities included a friendly game of Heads and Tails, musical mats (after all, who needs chairs) and cirque-inspired lobster corn dogs and chilled lemon parfaits. HATS OFF It was a day for playing dress-up when 400-plus ladies and lads celebrated the 26th annual Mad Hatter's Tea, "A Serenade to Style," at the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden. Chairman Lisa Loy Laughlin oversaw the champagne cocktail hour in Ginsburg Plaza. Post hat judging, the exuberant Jocelyn White introduced the fashion-show festivities, which included runway presentations by Diane von Furstenberg, Escada and Lela Rose. Faye Briggs took home the prize for Most Colorfully Flamboyant, while Jill Rowlett, dressed in head-to-toe Kermit the Frog, won Best of Show (who can resist a Muppet?). Feeling festive: Clarice Tinsley, Gary Riggs, Michael Faircloth, Heidi Dillon, Jacque Kennedy, Janie Robertson, Sheri Kern, Pamela Martin Duarte, and Jarrod Fresquez. IT'S A CHICK THING But Mama Always Put Vodka in Her Sangria! Such is the title of the latest book by Julia Reed, who served as the featured author and keynote speaker for this year's Chick Lit Luncheon. Dishing secrets from her upbringing in the Mississippi Delta, Reed charmed the crowd at the celebratory luncheon, which marked the 25th anniversary for Community Partners of Dallas, who hosted the fund-raiser at Brook Hollow Golf Club. Leading the charge were chairman Jennifer Evans Morris and honorary chair Jennifer Burr Altabef, who insisted that ladies don festive tiaras as they serenaded CPD with "Happy Birthday," capped off by a colorful confetti blast over the crowd. Tables were set with Southern charm: gorgeous hydrangea centerpieces, iced tea, pecan-crusted chicken and cherry pie. Chatty chicks: Tracy Matthews, Mary Katherine Gill, Angela Hughey, Virginia Talley, Browning Mank, Kathy Shearer, and Melinda Spence. CARING CAUSE Sisters Betsy and Sissy Cullum spearheaded the Callier Cares luncheon benefitting Callier Center for Communication Disorders. More than 300 guests dined on Niçoise salad at the Dallas Country Club while listening to the heartfelt testimony of keynote speaker/patient Terry Price, followed by Ruth Altshuler's presentation of the Ruth and Ken Altshuler Callier Care Award to Sara Martineau. Impacting attendees: Robyn Conlon, Jenifer and Peter Flynn, Pat Mattingly, Leslie and Michael Lanahan, and Stuart and Diane Bumpas.
