Linden Wilson A NOBLE MOVE ENDLESS SUMMER T wo titans — and big egos — of modern art square off in Dallas this month. At the Meadows Museum, it's Pablo Picasso ver- sus Diego Rivera, in a white-cube match-up of four canvases, two by each master, from the pivotal years that birthed Cubism, 1914 and 1915. Learn about the studio meetings in Paris that began as convivial dialogues but then turned sour, after Rivera ac- cused Picasso of plagiarizing his way of painting foliage. As Paris was the seat of the avant-garde, soon whisperings and rumors of the painter-to-painter drama spread among a close set of Montparnasse creators, from fellow Cubist Juan Gris to poet/painter/playwright Jean Coc- teau. See the bold Cubist canvases, both from Texas public collections — the Picasso belongs to the Meadows, while the Rivera is held by the LBJ Presidential Library — from this con- troversial period, paired with two more seminal paintings, both still lifes from that era, loaned by the Columbus Museum of Art (Ohio).
