20 letter editor HUNT SLONEM I have been searching through my files for the PaperCity version of 'Twas the Night Before Christmas, which I wrote a few years ago but never printed. It was 2014, and I remember having to ask the names of the Kardashian siblings. How fast information becomes part of our lexicon. The speed of change makes me yearn for old-school things … people, places, gifts, restaurants. Last night I was at a divine dinner at Château at La Table for Alex Gaudelet, honoring the history of De Beers Diamond Jewellers. The evening ended with a perfect meringue- covered mound of baked Alaska, each pouf cheerily flaming. The atmosphere, the service — all old school. In this issue are classic jewels meant to be gifted, and worn glamorously. There's a profile on Charles Cohen who, like Louis Mayer, Selznick, and Zanuck, loves celluloid and film, and who has pursued his passion by acquiring the archives of Buster Keaton and Merchant Ivory films, saved and preserved landmark movie theaters, and wins an Oscar along the way. Sir Mark Fehrs Haukohl collects art in an archetypical process that requires relentless research, with a deep collection of Old Master paintings and drawings and 21st-century photographs by European women as the end game. And our culinary arts pages feature five chefs whose love of food shows through in their cultivation, preparation, and presentation — a throwback to the great chefs of the 19th and early 20th centuries.
