Other pieces were left behind when the former owners vacated, including the Amparo suite's carved wood bed, a massive stone baptismal font in the courtyard, and a variety of Mexican religious relics. "We added some contemporary pieces to lighten things up, like the ceiling fixture from Design Within Reach in the coffee shop," says Rambo, who also used Visual Comfort lamps throughout the hotel designed by Christopher Spitzmiller and Houston designer Randy Powers. Antiques were sourced from some of Rambo's favorite Houston haunts, such as Heights An- tiques on Yale, and from shopping trips to Round Top and High Point. Many pieces, including a pair of lounge chairs upholstered in tropical palm leaf fabric, came from La Aurora, a San Miguel design showroom owned by Belgium-born Dirk Jan Kinet. Art is a mix of Goodall's own collection plus Etsy and estate sale finds. Of course, all of the bed linens are handmade from Hibiscus Lin- ens' artisan collections, which combine Goodall's modern aesthetic with traditional textile and needlework techniques from Mexico. Hotel Amparo fills a niche between San Miguel's big, five-star ho- tels and "the smaller boutique hotels filled with sleek and modern furnishings, trying to be hip," she says. "We are in between, doing something completely different." Hotel Amparo's focus is on service at a luxury level, she says. Each of the five guest rooms has its own concierge, who helps tailor your stay. "If you want to go to the market and need handholding, someone will go with you," Goodall says. "If you don't have time to read about San Miguel, we'll or- ganize things for you to do based on what your interests are. We take care of everything." The hotel also offers a chef's teaching kitchen, a wine bar with a selection of rare wines, a dessert bar, and a coffee shop stocked with San Miguel's only La Marzocco espresso machine.
