SALIENT FACTS. 14 B order Politics: An artist from El Paso interjects the elixir of wit into the heady cocktail of border politics at Ro2 Art. Headliner Angel Cabrales, sculpture professor at The University of Texas at El Paso, comes to town with his droll, but prescient exhibition, "It Came from Beyond the Border." The show parodies American border paranoia; one seminal image equates our time with Sci-Fi thrillers from the '50s and '60s where earthlings lived under the constant threat of alien attack from outer space (January 18 – February 23) … Beyond Still Life: At Galleri Urbane, dual solos for Stephen D'Onofrio and Liss LaFleur bear loaded meaning that unfolds upon close viewing (January 12 – February 16). Captivating still-life canvases by D'Onofrio, who's based in Philadelphia, pack a mid-century vibe along with allusions to contemporary idealized home-design tropes. Also sharing the stage, UNT art-and-design faculty member LaFleur employs glass and film-making in her statements about the LGBT community; she zeros in on the Cold War period when the U.S. and Canadian governments sought to eliminate gay men from military service. Her fruit-shaped glass vessels, scaled to the artist's own body and that of her mom, are in turn filled with Jello, which W hen Austin-based athleisure brand Outdoor Voices popped up in a tony Knox- Henderson space two years ago, it was love. Stylish types quickly began sporting the brand's signature crop tops and color-blocked leggings at workout spots around town. The feelings were mutual. Outdoor Voices has made its home in Dallas OUTDOOR VOICES GOES INSIDE permanent, trading its Knox-Henderson locale for new digs at NorthPark Center. Conceived by architectural designer Will Fox, the boutique takes cues from the YMCA — think an ultra-chic iteration of the famous recreation space, with stadium-style bleacher seating, and plenty of color. Christina Geyer ART NOTES brings its own domestic associations … Painter's Progress: The nuanced global vision and vaporous abstraction of painter Jackie Tileston are showcased at Holly Johnson Gallery (through January 26). A professor of art at the University of Pennsylvania in P h i l a d e l p h i a , the artist has collectors and followers extending back to her time in Texas in the late 1980s, when she was one of the early Core Fellows at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston's Glassell School of Art.
