AN EYE ON DESIGN A DIVINE DINNER AT FORTY FIVE TEN. BILLY FONG DISCUSSES LOUIS QUINZE TO JEAN PROUVE. PHOTOGRAPHY JONATHAN ZIZZO. I f you were driving down Main Street on this particular autumn evening — it would have been a little late; everything seems sexier after 9 pm on a school night — you might have seen an impossibly chic group cross- ing Main towards Forty Five Ten. Kristen Cole, the store's president and chief creative officer, had invited over a select few for a celebratory dinner following the annual Dallas PaperCity Design Awards during Texas Design Week Dallas, held at The Joule. A magical al fresco tableau awaited, with two long tables set within gazing distance of Tony Tasset's colossal Eye sculpture, which watched us enviously. It-floral designer Kyle Branch created the avant-garde blooms that nodded toward 1980s excess, with vibrant red, purple, and pink blooms. Cole winked toward that era herself, in a blue leop- ard-print dress by Maryam Nassir Zadeh — with a matching car coat, no less. Lord knows when so much design talent has gathered for an intimate dinner. I had glorious conversations between bites with Dallas design darling Cathy Kincaid on one side and the dashing and witty NY designer David Kleinberg on the other. Meanwhile, across the table, Architectural Digest editor in chief Amy Astley and Martyn Lawrence Bullard seemed to be plot- ting story ideas for the months ahead. The Dallas Design District's Bill Hutchinson and photographer Pieter Estersohn, in from NYC, were also deep in conversation. Other design luminaries were chatting about everything from Schumacher fabrics to ski chalets in Gstaad: Jeffrey Bilhuber, Caleb Anderson, Chesie Breen, Lee Ledbetter, Penny Morrison, Lance Scott, Carl Dellatore, Rizzoli editor Sandy Gilbert, and a clutch of Dallas design luminaries to make everyone feel at home: Jan Showers, James Showroom's Meredith Ellis, Lisa Fine, Forty Five Ten's Cindy Schwartz, Wells Abbott's Lauren Hudson, Room & Board's Mo Lesourd and Liz Elsea.
