30 GRIT UP AND GRIT DOWN BY LISA COLLINS SHADDOCK. PHOTOGRAPHY DANIEL DRIENSKY, ALEX DRIENSKY, KATE SIAMRO. I t was the 46th annual Cattle Baron's Ball — the sixth held at Dallas' urban cowboy mecca, Gilley's — and co-chairs Lisa Haddow Shirley and Wendy Messmann ensured it was a doozy of a night. The epic event is the largest single-night fundraiser for the American Cancer Society in the world and has raised more than $85 million since 1974. The theme, True Grit, celebrated the resilience of cancer survivors and cancer fighters everywhere. Thousands of custom-boot-clad guests, in all manner of denim, leather, and squash-blossom necklaces, made their way through the buzzing event, pausing to hear country artist Travis Tritt play, snack on ranch bites such as beef short-rib sliders and Shiner Bock Frito pie, and bid in the live auction, which alone brought in $1 million. After stopping by the firepit near the Ferris wheel for s'mores and one more Long Hot Summer (the night's citrusy, bubbly vodka cocktail), guests moved to the main-stage tent to dance and watch headliner Keith Urban close the night on a high note. TWO-STEPPING: 2020 Cattle Baron's Ball co-chairs Diana Hamilton and Heather Randall, Sunie and Steve Solomon, Marjon and Gibbs Henderson, Doris Jacobs, Geoffroy van Raemdonck and Alvise Orsini, Vodi Cook, Luis Araujo, Whitney and Aaron Carroll, and Gable and Ed Shaikh.
