CAFÉ SOCIETY I n homage to celebrated New York and Hollywood society haunts such as Café Carlyle and the Polo Lounge, where one dressed for dinner and were entertained by musical legends of their day, Houston concepteur Benjamin Berg brings us the clubby new music and dining venue Turner's. You'll find it on the ground level of The Annie Café & Bar, accessible through a separate side entrance on Ambassador Way. The intimate space is open for dinner only — and with less than 60 seats in the dining room and bar, reservations are THE CLUBBY NEW TURNER'S IS A HIT! BY LAURANN CLARIDGE. PHOTOGRAPHY KIRSTEN GILLIAM. a must. Berg, owner of Berg Hospitality Group, tapped architect Issac Preminger to reimagine the 1,637-square foot-space in dark blue with glimmers of gold on the gilded ceiling, mighty brass mirrors, gray-blue pinstriped Ralph Lauren wallpaper, oil-painted portraiture, and cheeky monkey chandeliers. The menu by James Beard award-winning exec chef Robert Del Grande and style of service (meals are often completed tableside) are a welcome throwback to a bygone era. Del Grande says, "We're featuring what we call heritage- type dishes that chefs over the years invested time and effort to perfect, but eventually it was overdone, losing its quality and luster, and became popular with the home cook. We're bringing back the ideas of those plates, merging some and adding new and exciting twists and presentation." You'll find lobster thermidor ($78), prime bone-in-rib-eye with oxtail steak butter ($78), Scottish salmon pot roast ($38), and steak tartare with foie gras torchon ($32), as well as classic cocktails, from a Negroni to an old-fashioned and plenty of big, bold wines. The doors open Tuesday through Saturday at 4 pm, and dinner service commences at 5 pm. Around 6 pm, a rotating list of pianists tap the keys; Thursday through Saturday, 9:30 pm to midnight, vocalists join the bill. Turner's, 1800 Post Oak Blvd., 713.804.1212, turnershouston.com.
