ALL About Adler The guru hits Houston to open his new shop, and a swinging party ensues. BY SETH VAUGHAN. PHOTOGRAPHY SHAU LIN HON. I Rachel Simon t was a madcap mix of witty, happy design, cheeky cocktails and bons mots when PaperCity and the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston joined with Jonathan Adler, who was in from New York City for the festive night, to celebrate the opening of his new West Ave boutique. The 3,500-square-foot emporium stocks not only the irreverent and irresistible ceramics the designer is famed for, but also madly chic, classically influenced furniture, pillows that pop, brass, Lucite and other waspy wares harkening to the Pop-era '60s and '70s. We couldn't get enough of the blown-up Slim Aarons photographs and the ceramic references to psychotropic substances (dolls, Prozac, uppers canisters, hashish candles). There's seemingly no end to Adler's droll sense of humor and appreciation for the slightly askew. Deco and art dames Holly Moore and Catherine D. Anspon of PaperCity, along with architect Lauren Rottet (fresh off a plane from China) and arts patron Leslie Hull hosted the evening, which brought out a lively group, all equally entranced by Adler. Heading up the CAMH contingent were museum director Bill Lauren Arning, curator Dean Daderko and director Mills of external affairs Connie McAllister. A percentage of the night's proceeds went to support the museum, making acquisitions all the more alluring. Following the bash, the party continued at nearby Armandos restaurant, where margaritas flowed and witty repartee ensued.
