OBSESSIONS. DECORATION. SALIENT FACTS. C ontinuing our focus on singular art spaces, we devote this column to Houston Museum of African American Culture, a Museum District nexus, where "a multicultural conversation on race geared toward a common future takes place." This museum is also a hub for activism. Recent exhibitions have included a powerful and poignant investigation into Sandra Bland's killing, Tara Conley's droll feminist "My Life as a Doll," and a melting-ice Trumpian white man by Ti-Rock Moore in "The Burning House," as well as a performance by the iconic Mardi Gras Indians. This month, HMAAC's Bert Long Gallery is the scene for an engaging take on abstraction by Dan Houston. This Florida-based painter forged his creative destiny in Houston, living here for four decades as he segued from a building-contractor career to his calling as full-time artist. Commercial success followed; giclée print reproductions of Houston's abstract canvases are featured in home-decorative collections at Target and World Market. During a walk through, the artist revealed that his influences are jazz music, AbEx forebear Franz Kline, and the stars, the latter fueled by frequent visits to NASA.
