Anne Lee Phillips THIS JUST IN D orothy Draper first designed her banana-leaf wallpaper in 1939 for the historic Arrowhead Springs resort in San Bernardino, California. Since then, the iconic pattern, Brazilliance, has become synonymous with Draper's inimitable style, one that focuses on exuberant colors and large prints that often cover entire walls. She also used striped papers to emphasize a room's height — The Greenbrier resort in West Virginia dazzles with Draper's striped and banana- leaf wallpapers — so what better idea than to combine them. Brazilliance Grove Stripe, created by Carleton Varney, president of Dorothy Draper & Co, is a fresh take on Draper's original design and adds height to a space by using banana leaves to create the classic Draper vertical stripes. Ideal for smaller spaces such as an entry, staircase, or powder bath, the new pattern comes in four vibrant colors — green, pink, aqua, and blue — and is also available in a fabric option. The Arsin family has been devoted to fine quality rugs for three generations, since their days at Tehran's famed Grand Bazaar in 1910. After success in the Dallas Design Center, the Arsins set their sights on Houston and have opened an expansive showroom in Decorative Center Houston on Woodway, led by sales manager Mark Odom and sales liaison Nancy Karimi. Look for more than 7,000 Persian, Turkish, Oriental, and European rugs and carpets, ranging from antiques to reproductions and modern styles.
