L a Vie Style House rolls out its signature pink carpet in River Oaks District Friday, October 15, stocked with its celebrity-adored caftans and kimonos. Founders Jamie Coulter and Lindsey McClain began La Vie Style House in Dallas in 2016, when they transitioned from making caftans for friends into a full-blown entity proffering their wares in pop- ups. The duo opened their flagship store in Dallas's Highland Park Village last October, tempting the fashion flock with vintage-inspired easy-to-wear designs, all of which are handmade in the United States. "The Houston store is inspired by a pink Parisian jewelry box — a wonderland of ornate one-of- a-kind pieces," McClain says. L ong before it became commonplace, Rice Gallery was one of a handful of spaces in the nation devoted to commissioning site- specific installation art. Now the gallery's 22-year history has been chronicled in One Thing Well, a definitive, lushly illustrated book featuring the 72 site- specific installations commissioned by the gallery during its existence, spanning 1995 to 2017. Director and chief curator Kim Davenport, who came up with the mission of focusing on installation art (hence the book's title), also had an unparalleled eye — many of the artists she invited had never shown previously in Texas or even the U.S., and many went on to important careers, including El Anatsui, Shigeru Ban, Tara Donovan, Nicole Eisenman, Sol LeWitt, Judy Pfaff, Karim Rashid, and, most famously Yayoi Kusama, whom Davenport tapped for Rice Gallery in 1997, a year before the artist's seminal MoMA show. Filled with stunning photography, One Thing Well was edited by Houston art writer Rainey Knudson, and includes essays by Davenport, Houston architect Carlos Jimenez, and legendary art pundit Dave Hickey, among others.
