T he Houston Design C e n t e r 's a n n u a l Fall Design Week + Access/Design takes place Tuesday t h r o u g h F r i d a y, October 5 through 8. AD 100 and Elle Decor A-List designer Corey Damen Jenkins headlines the event, with an 11 am opening-day luncheon keynote presentation and signing of his first book, Design Remix: A New Spin on Traditional Rooms (Rizzoli), at James Craig Furnishings Showroom. A VIP reception hosted by Design House Showroom precedes the event, at 10 am. The Detroit native is known for layering eye-catching patterns with vivid colors in classic interiors. In the afternoon keynote at 1 pm, architects Ted Flato and Evan Morris of Lake | Flato Architects discuss their new book, Lake | Flato Houses: Respecting the Land (Rizzoli); HKS hospitality interiors global design director Mary Alice Palmer and developer Richard Holland present their reimagining of Santa Fe landmark property Bishop's Lodge; and author Helen Thompson discusses her new book Santa Fe Modern: Contemporary Design in the High Desert (The Monacelli Press), all at Thorntree Slate & Marble Showroom. Subsequent events during the week include continuing education programs with Benjamin Moore and Estudio Group at Kitchen & Bath Concepts and talks on design trends with Talbot Cooley, Janus Lazaris, Kelly Gale Amen, and Laura Manchee at Meredith O'Donnell Fine Furniture. Anne Lee Phillips A ppropriately, after our pandemic time of sheltering inside, the AIA Houston Home Tour 2021 celebrates nature. A highlight of the fall for the architecture- and design-minded, the tour returns Saturday and Sunday, October 23 and 24, chaired by architect Bob Robinowitz, AIA (McIntyre + Robinowitz). The eight selected homes span a geographic swath of the city, showcasing a juried selection of the best of new residential design in Houston. Homes by winning firms encompass Natalye Appel + Associates Architects' Vassar Street Garden House; Collaborative Designworks' House 2344 and Woodhead Double; McIntyre + Robinowitz Architects' Lawrence Street Residence; Content Architecture's Allston Residence; studioMET architects' Jackson Residence and Tangley Residence; and Inflection Architecture's Windemere Residence. Ranging from 1,000 to nearly 5,000 square feet and reflecting varied takes on the language of contemporary architecture, all homes are united by a reverence for nature, vistas to the outdoors and embrace of green space, and devotion to natural light.
