Edith in November 2020) had many in mourning, due to their selfless legacy of supporting educational causes; medical research and public health programs; innovations in mathematics, science, engineering, and technology; and numerous arts and cultural initiatives. Those charitable endeavors will continue, however, through the O'Donnell Foundation, which they founded in 1957. Since then, the Texas-focused foundation has given more than $900 million to nonprofit causes. For many of the early years, those gifts were anonymous; it was not until later that the O'Donnells allowed their names to be associated with their donations. Guston created only 29 paintings from 1956 to 1960, which many consider his greatest period. Of that group, 10 are held as masterpieces; Nile is one. Seven are in the collections of the nation's leading art museums, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C.; and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. The other three are in private collections. Nile epitomizes the relationship that Guston developed with his canvases during that period, when he worked so closely to the picture plane that he would often get paint splatters in his eyes. Also up for auction are two of his later figurative works, Remorse (1969) and Studio Celebration (1978). Additional works from the couple's collection, including Stuart Davis' Closed Circuit (1962), will be for sale to support the O'Donnell Foundation. Nile will be auctioned at Sotheby's Modern Evening Auction in New York City on Tuesday, May 17, after a global tour with stops in London and Hong Kong. sothebys.com.
