OBSESSIONS. DECORATION. SALIENT FACTS. T he Moke, a small beach convertible originally designed for the military i n 1 9 6 4 , b e c a m e symbolic of island towns and the French Riviera. It was a favorite of the James Bond series, appearing i n f o u r f i l m s between 1967 and 1979, and a Moke w a s f a m o u s l y driven around Saint Tropez by Brigitte Bardot. For Celine's 2023 Spring/Summer Collection, creative director Hedi Slimane rekindled this spirit, customizing the Moke for its campaign. Shot at locations along the French Riviera, the special Moke features the Celine Triomphe signature emblem on its wheel, hood, and dash and is further elevated with tan leather, wicker seats, and spare-wheel cover. The elegant little beach cruiser with a little bit of history and a lot of panache has a place in our collection any day. Steven Hempel CELINE MOKE MYSTIC MAYA 320,000 WINKS T reasures from the Kimbell Art Museum's pre-Columbian blockbuster are this summer's required viewing. Among the most significant exhibitions of Mesoamerican art in memory, "Lives of the Gods: Divinity in Maya Art" culls nearly 100 works — in limestone, ceramic, jadeite, stone, and more — focusing on the Classic period (A.D. 250-900). As the Roman Empire was plunging into decline and the Middle Ages were beginning in Europe, the Mayan culture was at its peak, flourishing in the jungles of Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico. While ancient civilizations such as the Egyptians are studied exhaustively, the Maya remain under-known, their complex hieroglyphics not yet fully deciphered. "Lives of the Gods" promises to add much to the canon of Mayan studies with new finds, the revelation of artist's signatures, and an unpacking, as its title suggests, of the complex hierarchical society where gods and kings ruled in a ritualistic power structure. Four iconic works from the Kimbell, including a dramatic pair of censer stands, join 91 works from 22 institutions in the U.S., Europe, and Latin America — all rare finds originally excavated at nine Maya sites. It took two acclaimed American museums to pull together a show of this scope and ambition: The Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan and the Kimbell, where organizing curator Jennifer Casler Price is among the team of five scholars that made "Lives of the Gods" possible. Unlike many touring shows, this one has only two venues. The first was a critically praised run at The Met where The New York Times critic Holland Cotter devoted a column to this "totally riveting" exhibit and the second is the Kimbell, its final stop. The Dallas store is the first of 20 U.S. storefronts (the next is slated for Houston's River Oaks area in early winter), thanks to their strategic new partnership with MadaLuxe Group, a distribution platform for designer goods. Hästens' cloud-like mattress — composed of sustainably sourced cotton, wool, flax, and slow-grown Swedish pine — is meticulously crafted and built to last. Horsehair and wool comprise the moisture- wicking top layer, which is the only component of the mattress that should ever need to be replaced. (Mattress toppers cost around $7,000.) Inside the store you'll also find linen sets, plush robes, lavender pouches, travel pillows, and other accessories. King- sized beds start at $25,000, which is still staggering, but Hästens and the MadaLuxe Group are betting on Dallas' willingness to invest in a good night's sleep.
