A nointing Texas Artist of the Year: Always among the anticipated openings of the fall is Art League Houston's Texas Artist of the Year exhibition, followed by a gala night that bestows honors for Patron of the Year and Lifetime Achievement (save the date: Friday, October 13). This year, accolades go to Vincent Valdez for Artist of the Year, Patron Cecily Horton, and Lifetime honoree Wendy Watriss of FotoFest. At ALH, Valdez's two-part exhibition pairs the haunting installation Siete Dias/Seven Days (featuring portraits of 14 individuals who disappeared decades ago in Central America) with selected works from the artist's personal collection, as well as his San Antonio patron Joe Diaz's private trove of artworks that have inspired the artist (September 22 – December 2). The Sankofa Endeavor: A multi-year project that spanned the pandemic years takes over Lawndale Art Center when artist Tierney Malone, creator of The Jazz Church of Houston, curates "The Sankofa Project." Sankofa is a Ghanian word that translates as "One must acknowledge the past in order to move forward." The exhibition examines racial reckoning in America post George Floyd. Malone brings together nine talents who created billboard-sized artworks installed in Lawndale's Main Street windows from 2020 into 2023, including Rabéa Ballin, Sheila Pree Bright, Tay Butler, Robert Hodge, Ann "Sole Sister" Johnson, David McGee, Whitney-exhibited Jason Moran, Lovie Olivia, and Malone himself (September 16 – December 16). David McGee's Next Act: Menil- collected David McGee solos this fall at his new home, Inman Gallery, in the stylistically diverse exhibition "David McGee: The Tarot Cards and The Gloria Paintings." The latter artworks offer homage to his mother, Gloria McGee, a cancer survivor. Expect more of a national footprint for McGee and increasing museum recognition, now that ADAA (Art Dealers Association of America) member Kerry Inman reps him (September 16 – November 1) Collage King at Koelsch: Rumors have swirled about Lance Letscher's first show in Houston in more than a decade. Not since his long- time Colquitt dealer, McMurtrey Galley (closed in 2015), have we seen Letscher's high voltage take on the retro but rediscovered art of collage. Koelsch Gallery presents "Mind's Eye," a solo that underscores the Austin-based artist's timeless way with all manner of ephemera. OBSESSIONS. DECORATION. SALIENT FACTS. ART NOTES Before seeing the Koelsch show, check out the 2017 feature-length documentary The Secret Life of Lance Letscher (September 16 – October 28). Stained-Glass Street Art: Redbud Gallery, reborn into the nonprofit Redbud Arts Center, presents a retrospective for a mid-career artist whose works are usually spray-painted on city walls rather than gracing a white cube: Daniel Anguilu, one of the graffiti talents who have made Houston a capital for street art. Anguilu, whose images recall stained glass, is known for this distinctive style; we last featured him in 2021 for his mural on an East End church revitalized into Arowyn Studios on Sherman Street (September 2 – October 28). Just in: Former McClain Gallery director Erin Dorn has struck out on her own. Later this month or early October, she launches her newly minted artspace, Seven Sisters, at 805 Rhode Place (around the corner from Bludorn restaurant and blocks from the Residences at The Allen). Dorn's new gallery will showcase fine art, craft, design, and special projects. Its distinctive name was conceptualized with the star cluster Pleiades in mind, "embodying an ethos of collaboration, creation, pathfinding, and storytelling." Stay tuned.
