T oasting Three GOATS: A l w a y s a m o n g t h e anticipated exhibitions of the fall is Art League Houston's Texas Artist of the Year show, followed by a big gala night that also bestows honors for Patron of the Year and Lifetime Achievement: ALH 75th Anniversary Stardust Gala, Friday, October 13, at Hotel ZaZa. In 2023, accolades go to Vincent Valdez for Artist of the Year, Patron of the Year Cecily Horton, and Lifetime honoree FotoFest's Wendy Watriss. At ALH, Valdez's two-part exhibition pairs the haunting installation Siete Dias/Seven Days, featuring portraits of 14 individuals who disappeared decades ago in Central America, with works from the artist's personal collection as well as his San Antonio patron Joe Diaz's private trove of artworks that have inspired Valdez (through December 2). Diamond Anniversary: Contemporary Arts Museum Houston also celebrates 75 years. CAMH marks this milestone with an exhibition devoted to six talents who encompass the avant-garde of today, with an emphasis on Houston artists or those with hometown connections. Featured are new commissions as well as existing creations by Mel Chin (a swimming-pool vignette with groovy seats), JooYoung Choi (making a cake-type installation with her joyful cartoony puppet characters), MFAH Core Fellow alum Leslie Hewitt, Rice assistant professor of sculpture Lisa Lapinski, Dallas-based abstract ART NOTES painter Leslie Martinez (also showing at MoMA PS1 next month), and Jill Magid, who has a project history with CAMH director Hesse McGraw that involves t r a n s f o r m i n g a r c h i t e c t Luis Barragán's ashes into a diamond (October 27 – March 27, 2024). Maverick Man: Speaking of ashes, read our online tribute to the late beloved artist, gallerist, and curator Wayne Gilbert, a true Texas original and the most connected catalyst in the Houston art world. The ash reference refers to the artist's preferred paint medium — cremated human remains — as well as the documentary of his career, Ash, which screened at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, during the 2017 Houston Cinema Arts Festival. Come together to honor Gilbert's remarkable life Sunday, October 15, 2 pm, at Redbud Arts Center. East Side Realignment: It's all happening in the historic East End — a story we're tracking throughout this fall and well into next spring. The biggest news swirls around Deborah Colton Gallery's move to 201 Roberts Street, where she partners under the moniker DCG in a collaborative creative venture with The MAG (Modern Art Gallery), an entity of the collective Emergent & Co., founded by Emmanuel Alia, William York, and Tay Powers. The players were brought together by late Texas artist Jesse Lott. The MAG – DCG promises an innovative new chapter in Houston art history, with many moving parts. Be there for the grand opening Saturday, October 14, 7 to 10 pm, at the art space's circa- '40s modernist building. It launches with the exhibition "Moments to Remember," focused on photographic portraits of artists before they were famous, primarily taken by the late William John Kennedy, as well as images by Maripol and Stephen Torton. In their lenses: Andy Warhol (circa 1960s), Robert Indiana, Debbie Harry, Madonna, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Keith Haring (through December 17).
