R othschild. The name alone conjures a fantasy world of opulence and the most refined taste. After a world tour to preview the glittering and historic decorative and fine art in the "Rothschild Masterpieces" sale, the gavel at Christies will drop on lot after lot — for what we anticipate are record-breaking amounts. It's the first- ever North American sale of objects belonging to a re n o w n e d f a m i l y t h a t collected for centuries, with a live auction at Rockefeller Center in New York City launching with a night sale on Wednesday, October 11, followed by two day-sales Thursday OBSESSIONS. Christies has brought together 600 lots including French furniture, majolica, enamels, Renaissance jewels, silver, and Old Master paintings. The lots, estimated to sell in excess of $20 million, were collected by two generations of the family during the latter half of the 19th century. Many of these masterpieces were housed in the palatial Château de Ferrières outside Paris (which opened in 1862 with a gala attended by Napoleon III). Given their long history of philanthropy, the family bequeathed the estate to France in 1975, and it is now owned by the town of Ferrières. Over the past 100 years, the Rothschilds have entrusted the venerable auction house with previous sales. The final tally for one held in London in July 2019 — "Masterpieces from a Rothschild Collection" — was 280 percent above the low estimate. And, with the holidays around the corner, who doesn't love a shiny bauble or chaise wrapped up with a bow. christies.com. Billy Fong Rothschild Going Once ...
