Design-Filled DAZE A Wrap-Up of INSIDE TEXAS DESIGN WEEK HOUSTON T exas Design Week Houston kicked off at Shops at Arrive River Oaks and Azzurri Kitchens, where a crowd of guests gathered in pursuit of one truth: the secret to designing the perfect kitchen. Dallas designer Doniphan Moore, The Design Atelier founder Melanie Millner (in from Atlanta), and Dallas designer Caitlin Wilson joined moderator Laurann Claridge for Kitchen Confidential — Designing Great Kitchens, presented by Monogram Luxury Appliances. Chef Robbie Rensel ran the Monogram kitchen at Azzurri through its paces, presenting a light lunch while Wilson signed her new book, Return to Pretty: Giving New Life to Traditional Style (Abrams), and Ann Sacks (whose showroom is located just across the drive) showcased new stone and tiles. It was a multicultural afternoon with a side of time travel when design-world legend Newell Turner debuted his new book, Mexican: A Journey Through Design (Vendome), at Laura Rathe Fine Art for an ardent crowd of design, art, and travel devotees. Nearly 100 strong, they filled By Caitlin Hsu, Catherine D. Anspon, Anne Lee Phillips. Wrapping up day one was Lela Rose, a true queen of entertaining. The serial hostess and fashion designer — her pretty dresses are worn by Gwyneth Paltrow, Reese Witherspoon, Uma Thurman, and more — delivered a lively talk at OKA's West Alabama outpost. Rose signed her book Fresh Air Affairs: Entertaining with Style in the Great Outdoors (Rizzoli), which draws inspiration from her homes in New York City, Jackson Hole, and Dallas, her childhood home. Needless to say, the evening followed her motto: "Eat, drink, dress Lela!" Design icons Alex Papachristidis and Richard Mishaan joined moderator Chesie Breen at CASA Houston for an illustrated talk. Guests enjoyed a wide-spanning conversation with the two Elle Decor A-listers and AD100 alumni. Both signed their new books: Alex Papachristidis' The Elegant Life: Rooms That Welcome and Inspire (Rizzoli) and Richard Mishaan Design: Architecture and Interiors (Vendome). "What career might you have chosen if not for design?" asked moderator Breen. "A curator," said Richard Mishaan. "A high-end butler," said Alex Papachristidis.
