A t Decorative Center Houston, after a sweet introduction from his friend Ann Sutherland, founder of Perennials, the erudite architect Bobby McAlpine confessed to guests that his work has taken a sharp turn from his previous oeuvre, which had elevated him to icon status, and stated that he is bringing romance to modernism. McAlpine then signed his new book, McAlpine: Romantic Modernism (Rizzoli), at David Sutherland showroom. Also at Decorative Center Houston, design met psychology in what can only be described as the most glamorous college lecture ever. University of Leeds professor of color science and technology Stephen Westland and Sanderson Design Group creative director Claire Vallis, both in from England, joined Houston designers Courtnay Tartt Elias and Dennis Brackeen for an illustrated talk moderated by Sanderson Design Group CEO Beth Holman and hosted by Culp Associates. Westland kicked off the talk by giving us the answer we were seeking: Color does indeed affect us emotionally, psychologically, and physiologically. Recharged by the talk, guests moved on to Culp Associates for lunch.
