Harriet Miers, Carolyn Miller PAPERCITY PROMOTION T his year's Humble Beginnings Luncheon brought 900 supporters to the Hilton Anatole to celebrate Austin Street Center's 40th anniversary and its mission of helping the homeless find a permanent place to call home. High on the agenda was an inspiring conversation with the 66th Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice — the first Black woman to hold the position of Secretary of State, and the first woman ever to serve as National Security Advisor. Moderating the talk was the Hon. Jeanne L. Phillips, who worked with Rice during President George W. Bush's administration as U.S. ambassador to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. They addressed topics from current events to anecdotes about Rice's childhood. Themed "Opening the Door to Hope, Healing, and Home," the luncheon was chaired by Ashlee and Chris Kleinert, with Lynn McBee serving as honorary chair, and Nancy Best was honored with the Norm Hitzges Distinguished Service Award and Southern Methodist University was honored with the Leadership Award. "Through the support of others, we continue to work tirelessly to serve the most highly vulnerable populations," Austin Street Center CEO Daniel Roby told guests. "It is our goal that every homeless person who comes to Austin Street Center finds hope, support, and the resources they need to transition out of homelessness." In all, the luncheon raised more than $1,085,000 for the cause. Afterwards, guests were gifted with a hand- poured candle by Xela Aroma.
