Overload T he Dallas Art Fair celebrated its sweet 16 with a whirlwind of parties for VIPs (Veritably Intriguing Personages). Ninety- one international exhibitors showcased works by new art-world creatives, as well as tried-and-true masters, for the perusal of seasoned collectors and philistines alike — those who make the hallowed Artnews Top 200 Collectors List and others who simply want to ogle the rarefied Dallionaire. I had lunch with Dallas Art Fair founder John Sughrue after the dust settled, and he was pleased with the outcome for both our city and the participating galleries. Three large-scale artworks from the fair were added to the Dallas Museum of Art's permanent collection through the eighth Dallas Art Fair Foundation Acquisition Program, an initiative that has funded $875,000 for the DMA's permanent collection since 2016. This year's chosen artworks were by Ailbhe Ní Bhriain (Kerlin Gallery), JooYoung Choi (Inman Gallery), and Thania Petersen (Nicodim Gallery). I channeled my inner Carrie Bradshaw for those 10 days of parties and happenings, which I term Art & The City. Like Carrie, I had numerous outfit changes daily to bolster our reputation as a fashionable city for the visiting out-of-towners. My first semi-official art event was a Tuesday luncheon hosted by Annika Cail and Kristyn Ampofo for visiting TAFETA Gallery director Sadie Sherman (a former Dallas resident) at the rooftop restaurant of the Hôtel Swexan. The London gallery, established in 2013, specializes in 20th-century and contemporary African Art. Located in London's Fitzrovia district, with a project space in Lagos, TAFETA represents artists Babajide Olatunji, Niyi Olagunju, and Enam Gbewonyo. Spotted at that sky-high event was a veritable who's who including Jessica Nowitzki, Porschla Kidd, and Jennifer Klos. By Billy Fong. Photography Exploredinary.
