Chanel Métiers d'Art runway show is a once- a-year extravagant production, created to show the craftsmanship and creations of the Maisons d'Art ateliers: the embroiderers, feather workers, paruriers, goldsmiths, pleaters, shoemakers, hatters, and milliners that are the heart of fashion. Chanel has purchased eight of these artisan ateliers to ensure their work continues. They are: Lemarié — featherworker since 1880, flower worker, pleater, couture expert, and textile ennoblisher — which hand-assembles the Chanel camellia that appears on many designs; Massaro, shoemaker since 1894; Lesage, embroiderer since 1924 and tweed maker; Desrues, parurier d'art since 1929, which crafts buttons, jewelry, belt buckles, and handbag clasps; Maison Michel, hatter and milliner since 1936; Atelier Montex, embroiderer since 1939; Goossens, goldsmith since 1950; and Paloma, atelier flou since 1982. The Métiers d'Art runway shows are always in unexpected locations, such as Senegal, Rome, Scotland — and who could forget Dallas and the Chanel rodeo in 2013/2014. For this year, Chanel chose Manchester to pay homage to Chanel and England's rich history, inspired by the culture of Manchester's music and nightlife. It was here that Chanel first fell in love with tweeds. The collection plays up vibrant colored tweeds, as well as Great Britain touchpoints such as wraparound skirts, Bermuda shorts, miniskirts with godets, and coat dresses, all in tweed, Shetland knitwear, and cashmere.
