M erriam-Webster defines an insider as a person in a position of power or one who has access to confidential information. But, for our purposes, it's anyone who can tell us the best spot to play mahjong. Yes, we're a glamorous city, but we're also a tricky one. Our insider is that chic confidante with the scoop on how to get a reservation at the hottest new omakase joint or the best spot to people-watch or, in some cases, be seen. Given the massive influx of transplants — from Manhattan migratory birds to international arrivals — over the past few years, we're constantly asked for tips on how to thrive and survive in our little hamlet. At the top of the list is invariably where to park at Highland Park Village. Our beloved little shopping center is like a Monopoly board of coveted luxury labels. At this point, with Dior poised to move into its bigger digs in the former Ralph Lauren space and Khaite and Chloe also ready to perform the Texas debutante dip, more and more clients pour in hourly to shop. In fact, we still see the holding pen in front of Chanel on weekends for the acolytes awaiting access. My advice is to use the valet by Café Pacific or parallel park on Douglas Avenue between Edmondson and Livingston Avenues. You can remain there for two hours without being ticketed by the Highland Park police force, and there are usually a few spots available (at least until this story comes out). Hopefully this issue will become dog-eared and remain on your bookshelf for the coming years — your own Insider's Guide to Dallas.
