JULY | PAGE 8 | 2014 Inspiring DESTINATIONS MAYBE IT'S AN EXHIBITION, A MUSEUM, A HOTEL, THE COLOR OF THE SAND, A SOUK OR AN ENTIRE COUNTRY THAT INSPIRES EVERY FIBER OF YOUR BEING. WE ASKED SOME OF THE MOST CREATIVE PEOPLE WE KNOW JUST WHAT INSPIRES THEM AND GETS THEM MOTIVATED TO DESIGN, CREATE OR PONDER LIFE. WHEREVER IT IS … WE WANT TO GO THERE. CHRISTEN WILSON ART COLLECTOR AND PATRON | DESTINATION: CORNWALL, ENGLAND F or my husband's 40th birthday, we spent six days with our dearest friends on an island off Turks & Caicos. If I could wake up anywhere every day for the rest of my life, it would be there. Between the crystal-blue waters, the white sandy beaches, the yoga and late-morning tennis sessions, it really is my place of serenity. My dear friend, Crawford Sherman, manages the hotel on the island, which is called Parrot Cay by COMO. It's truly to die for. On our second visit to Parrot Cay, I took hundreds of pictures of the island as inspiration for my Spring 2015 collection, which I'm currently developing. There is nothing more inspiring than moments in life where you are the most fulfilled. Being on the island really allows for nothing more than soaking in and indulging your senses. I'm overwhelmed by color every time I visit. From the deepest and brightest cerulean and indigo blues in the ocean to the hues of rich magentas and soft lavenders that fill the night sky, it's like being in an over-saturated photograph. I want my spring collection to take you there, so you can smell the fresh ocean breeze and feel the warmth of the sun on your skin. It makes me smile just thinking about it. Our main destination was Cornwall in the south of England, but we decided to break up the trip with a stop in Devon at Bovey Castle and then spend the last four days in London. When we arrived in Cornwall, we checked into The Nare hotel, which overlooks Carne Beach on the Roseland Peninsula. It's a family-owned country-style home that was turned into a hotel inn in 1989 and is still owned by the original family. The hotel reminded me of Malibu untouched, and the beaches are still wide open with blooming wild flowers all around and a family environment that has a way of taking you back in time. At night, we visited local pubs; our favorite was The Kings Head. Most nights were spent with board games and hearing stories from the locals or the return guests who come down from London every year. Cornwall has surfing and long hikes in the magical green hills (with wild horses). It truly transplants you to a land that you think only exists in a movie. Locally, you can visit the St. Just in Roseland Church, Melinsey Mill and Sam's on the Beach. Just a short drive away is the Tate St. Ives museum, the National Maritime Museum and the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden. When we left, we all had rosy cheeks, smiles on our face and warm memories to last a lifetime. BILLY FARRELL AGENCY Cuixmala M y most inspirational trip was last year to the Venice Biennale. I attended with my mother, who is also an art historian, so this was our ultimate mother- daughter destination. What is so great about the biennale is that it's not commercial, which is so different from an art fair. It's really about exploring and learning about art while enjoying the architecture and history of Venice. Although fashion doesn't have much of a presence at some art fairs, the Prada Foundation had a very interesting show during the biennale, "When Attitudes Become Form: Bern 1969/ Venice 2013," curated by Germano Celant — but my favorite was Rudolf Stingel at the Palazzo Grassi. This meditative show took you into another world, with Oriental rugs covering the walls and ceilings and more than 30 of Stingel's paintings from collections all over the world. It was an incredible experience in a very old palazzo owned by the François Pinault Foundation. After a full day of art consumption, we stopped off at Caffe Florian in Piazza San Marco with live classical music, or I would sip my favorite Italian aperitif, Aperol, at Hotel Danieli. For dinner, we dined at Il Ridotto — and afterwards, floated in a gondola to the classic hotel Cipriani, where they have turtles walking in the garden. During the trip, I discovered an amazing jewelry shop, Attilio Codognato, in Venice. I love the way they fuse gothic elements with history and Venetian tradition. Combine the most cutting-edge art with the amazing history of Venice, and you have the perfect trip.
