Anspon ON THE BLOCK: Texas Art I f fashion is a religion, then Louis Vuitton is the church — and Nicolas Ghesquière, its high priest. Following his ascension to the helm of the famed French fashion house only a year ago, Ghesquière has not only thrown out the book, he's rewritten the commandments, infusing the historic institution with his signature edge. His latest creed, as part of a collection entitled The Icon and Iconoclasts, celebrates the most sacred icon of the brand's founding doctrine: the monogram. Carrying out the mission are six artists and designers from the fields of fashion, art, architecture and product design: Christian Louboutin, Cindy Sherman, Frank Gehry, Karl Lagerfeld, Marc Newson and Rei Kawakubo. These innovators offer up cool, sometimes surreal revisions of leather goods ranging from steamer trunks to backpacks. The results are as stylish as they are sacred — and as wearable as they are worshiped. Frank Gehry's Twisted Box mixes the Vuitton's code of heritage craftsmanship with the architect's own reverent approach. "I didn't want it to be just 'a thing,' so I spent time with Louis Vuitton to talk about the refinement of details, the clasp, the whole of it," says Gehry. "The interior is more private, and a darker blue just felt more orderly somehow — that it would give the things in the bag more clarity." It is this approach to collaboration and design that elevates Louis Vuitton beyond just being a purveyor of products and into the realm of the profound — a sanctuary where a bag isn't just a bag, it's a belief. $2,790 to $23,300, at the Louis Vuitton boutique. "Pocket squares are one of the few options that men have to really show color or personality in their attire," he says. "My favorite example is the Bond movies; he wears a pocket square in nearly every scene of Skyfall." Quixotic (a nod to Cervante's Don Quixote, of course) is based on the "square-for-square model," which proves chivalry is not dead: If you lose or damage a pocket square, the company will send a complimentary replacement. The only catch is that you have to share the story of how you lost your pocket square with the company. Perhaps it's the tale of the night you dabbed red wine from a Dior dress, or the afternoon you spread your Quixotic square on a muss to save a Jimmy Choo, or the day you loaned your favorite gingham square to a damsel en détresse. Novack adds an additional dash of charitable charm to his chivalrous vibe: An advocate to assist the end of domestic violence, he supports Dallas-based organizations The Family Place and Genesis Women's Shelter and Support, to which he donates 10 percent of sales. To purchase and learn how to properly wear a pocket square, visit the website. $35 and $55, at quixotic.co.
