TALKING WITH TOMEI Oscar winner Marisa Tomei — this year's Art of Film honoree, presented by the Dallas Film Society — has been described as a romantic rebel and provocative risk taker for the bold roles she has played on television, film and stage. Cinephiles packed the auditorium at The Perot Museum of Nature and Science to welcome her to town for the award presentation. Lee Papert, CEO of the Dallas Film Society, and artistic director James Faust turned the mic over to renowned film critic Elvis Mitchell, who invited Tomei — a "fellow Sagittarius" — to the stage. The critically acclaimed actress dazzled with her charming wit and infectious laughter during an open forum that explored her career, her love of theater and how she got her break with a brash boy named Vinny … All ears: chairs Pam and Mark Denesuk, board director Don Stokes, and guests Kara and Randall Goss, Sheri Deterling, Anne and Steve Stodghill, Ruth Mutch, and Jenn Faust. FEBRUARY | PAGE 12 | 2015 REUNIGHT RETURNS Everyone was in fine spirits at the Place at Perry's for the second annual ReuNight benefitting The Family Place. Chairs Mary Clare Finney and Kayla and Brian Roughton introduced the evening's high note: a performance by Southern Gentlemen, an a cappella group from SMU, followed by southern comfort food before rocking the night away on the dance floor, fuelled by DJ Lucy Wrubel's disco-chic tunes. Smooth moves: Leisa Street, Julie Hawes, Karla McKinley, Mary Cesarini, Lisa Ogle, and Shivangi Pokharel. A MOMENTOUS CHANGE The mood was magnanimous at Changing the Odds Dinner hosted by Salesmanship Club and Momentous Institute at the Winspear Opera House. Co-chairs Bill and Jennifer McCann and Michael and Amy Meadows mingled among the well-heeled at the intimate event, which also kicked off the Changing the Odds conference that weekend. The institute's executive director, Michelle Kinder, introduced keynote speaker, best-selling author Malcolm Gladwell, who addressed the importance of including social and emotional health-based curriculum in scholastic programs. Feeling inspired: Jennie and Stuart Reeves, Jeff and Regen Fearon, Carol Dalton, Susan Palma, and Roger Horchow. A BOTANICAL BASH The evening was in full bloom at the 34th annual Flora Award Gala at Fair Park. Inside the solarium of Texas Discovery Gardens, chairman Stacey Beck welcomed patrons and supporters to the botanical black-tie affair that honored long-time supporters Suzy and Tom Rhodes. As patrons indulged in warm apple turnovers, the Steve Bayless Orchestra took over the dais, charming all with symphonic wonders. Fluttering with excitement: Cindy and Charlie Feld, Denis and Karen Boulle, and Kathi and Tom Lind.
