PHOTOGRAPHY RHIANNON LEE, RACHAEL WISE. A BREAKFAST THAT CARES Talk about an early-morning wake-up call: "I was dead for 30 seconds." Those chilling words were spoken by former Boston Celtics player Chris Herren at the 30th Annual CARE Breakfast as he described his 15-year struggle with drugs and alcohol. He told the 550 guests in attendance at the Omni Hotel that without organizations such as CARE (Chemical Awareness, Resources & Education), he would never have overcome his battle with substance abuse. The breakfast — chaired by Shirley Cohn, alongside honorary chairs Clayton and Ellen Kershaw — raised more than $220,000 for the nonprofit. CARE givers: Pam Murray, Kadie Hill, Beth Bradshaw, Peyton Blackwell, Robin Bagwell, and Jim and Leslie Melson. ON THE MOVE When country singer Julie Roberts belted out her latest hit, "Good Wine and Bad Decisions," at the 8th Annual On the Move Luncheon, you could hear the refrains throughout the Ritz-Carlton. Roberts was the perfect headliner for The National Multiple Sclerosis Society benefit, as the cause is near and dear to her heart. Diagnosed with MS at the age of 27, she now serves as an ambassador for the organization and travels the country to promote both her music and her cause. "I want people to know that I can still do whatever I want," she said. The evening also commemorated the late Dee Wynne, whose legacy was honored with the Novartis Person on the Move Award. Applauding: Barb and Randy Biddle, Nancy Harte, Cory Richards, Paula Baldwin, and Jarod Anderson.
