AS TOLD TO CATHERINE D. ANSPON. PHOTOGRAPHY BILL McCULLOUGH, BILLMCCULLOUGH.COM. "Walking across the railroad tracks after the ceremony on the way to the reception, a cowboy rode up on his horse as the sun set." — Jenny Antill Clifton ROMANCE ON THE The Leads: Bride Jenny Antill, PaperCity photo editor and photographer; groom Cory Clifton, finance man and ace amateur baseball player. The couple met August 26, 2011, through mutual friends at Jackson's Watering Hole, Houston; he was in town to play a game with his baseball team, the Texas Playboys. The Set: The Gage Hotel, Marathon, Texas. The Plot: Like something out of an old Western, the West Texas hamlet of Marathon played a big part in this true- life romance. Both bride and groom were enamored of the environs. Marathon is famous as a stop on the way to Big Bend — and, at 100 miles from Terlingua, was a four-day horseback ride back in the day. Tumbleweed Town: Beautifully restored by Houston energy tycoon/collector J.P. Bryan of Torch Energy, the stately yet intimate lodging, circa 1920s, lent authentic allure to the nuptial festivities. The bride credits Ann Urban at the Gage for taking the stress out of details large and small so the out-of-town couple — the bride based in Houston and the groom then living in Austin — could relax, enjoy family and friends, and just hang out. Let the Sunshine In: After dodging rain all weekend, the ceremony took place as planned alfresco in the Gardens at the Gage. The service was conducted by Reverend James Derkits from Trinity By the Sea Episcopal Church in Port Aransas; the bride has known him since her teenage summers at Camp Allen. As a harbinger of good fortune, "The sun came out during the service and shone on us," she notes. (The priest also performed the betrothal ceremony with the couple and the bride's mother, Carol Antill, earlier that summer.) RANGE JENNY ANTILL+CORY CLIFTON'S WEST TEXAS NUPTIALS SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 2014 Signed, Sealed and Delivered: The letterpress invitations were created by Antiquaria Design Studio, Austin, then inserted into envelopes calligraphed by the bride's artistic sister-in-law, Katy Antill. They were posted from Marathon with vintage stamps from eBay. "Marathon is a true West Texas tumbleweed town," the groom says. "The opportunity to literally take it over with our families and friends was something we did not plan but really discovered during the moment. All the townsfolk and shopkeepers were very welcoming. The Gage Hotel made it all the better with great food and cocktails, accommodations and a terrific staff." – Cory Clifton Lensman of Note: The man who captured it all was nationally exhibited photogra- pher Bill McCullough, based in Austin. The bride met McCullough a decade ago when she worked at FotoFest. She Wore, He Wore: The bride's gown was Monique Lhuillier, paired with a custom veil, both from Casa de Novia. The groom wore a suit from Stag in Austin. Blooms: Michelle West with the Gage devised the bouquets of pale roses and dahlias; garlands of greens suggested sagebrush. In the Bag: À Bientôt's Betty Newton designed adorable goodie bags emblazoned with a white buffalo. The couple stocked them with sunglasses stamped with the wedding date, custom water bottles and M&Ms decorated with the newlyweds' faces. Into the Sunset: After one last dance to Austin band Lost Soul Revue, an impromptu solo of "'Til I Gain Control Again" by wedding guest Gretchen Scardino and a final shot quaffed at the White Buffalo Bar, the couple lit out the next day for Hotel Havana in San Antonio, then to California's rugged coast, Big Sur. "Not to miss any of the action, we provided Polaroid cameras for the guests to capture candids." — Jenny Antill Clifton POLAROID SHOT BY GUEST POLAROID SHOT BY GUEST POLAROID POLAROID SHOT BY GUEST Tatiana Massey and her daughter, Daria, the flower girl Laura and James Derkits The bride's sister, maid of honor Julie Bergeron.
