Thus, there will be plenty of material to spark young crowds into an awareness of current trends on the art front — such as Pipilotti Rist, a Swiss artist known for images often displayed as projections, who produces work with provocative titles such as I'm Not The Girl Who Misses Much and Pour Your Body Out. Anna-Sophia gave me a sidelong glance while describing one exhibition that "involves spinning cars." Thus, it appears that the younger van Zweden has the Dionysian (luna) aspect of the festival thoroughly covered. Most moving, however, was their description of a concluding performance in Klyde Warren Park. It's a patriotic work and, as Jaap van Zweden phrases it, "I want this to be my personal 'thank you' to the city of Dallas." Both he and his daughter have traversed America and the European continent numerous times. And, like "Lenny's piece" (their vernacular for Bernstein's Kaddish), they carry the past with them as they advance. In keeping with the grand lesson of Virgil's Aeneid, moving the past forward is the only way genuine progress is ever made. Therefore, with Soluna, Dallas should brace itself for a mammoth leap into uncharted territory. With the maestro and his elegantly educated daughter at the helm, the city is about to surge into its own remarkable vision for itself. The city's anthem might still be "Hey, Big Spender," but in the coming months, it might be belted out with sufficient volume to be heard from here to Amsterdam's Museumplein — where I've heard they love to shop, too. American art photographer and filmmaker Alex Prager debuts new work in the U.S., as well as her acclaimed film installation Face in the Crowd, 2013. MAY 8 & 9 Visual Art: ReMix: Hollywood Exile (7:30 pm, Dallas City Performance Hall). Karina Canellakis leads works by European composers who fled Europe and found a home in Hollywood — and a second outlet writing film music. The evening also includes a world-premiere video by artist Pipilotti Rist to accompany music by Rózsa, plus artist-in- residence Conrad Tao performing Spellbound Concerto. MAY 14 & 16 Orchestral: Bernstein Symphony No. 3 (7:30 pm, Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center). Jaap van Zweden, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and the Children's Chorus of Greater Dallas perform Bernstein's Kaddish Symphony, with a pre-concert video screening of artist Yael Bartana's Inferno. MAY 15 – 17 Dance & Theater: Spring Celebration (7:30 pm and 2:30 pm, Wyly Theatre). The Black Dance Theatre performs ballet, modern dance and urban gestures that explore growing up in urban America to the world- premiere performance by choreographer Daniel Catanach with original music by composer David Dabbon. MAY 16 Lectures: "Oral Fixation — Destination America: True Stories of Immigration" (7:30 pm, Dallas Museum of Art). The power of the human spirit is revealed in seven true stories told by immigrants from Texas, including Mexican-born artist Francisco Moreno and Texas-born multimedia artist Monte Laster. MAY 17 Orchestral: St. Vincent (8:30 pm, Annette Strauss Square). This concert, a co-presentation with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and AT&T Performing Arts Center, marks the return to Dallas of Grammy-winning alternative rocker St. Vincent (Annie Clark) and a collaboration with members of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. MAY 21 – 23 Orchestral: Mahler 3 (7:30 pm, Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center). Maestro van Zweden conducts one of Mahler's biggest and most challenging works. MAY 24 Orchestral: Salute to the Armed Forces (8:30 pm, Klyde Warren Park). The DSO presents a free concert in the park to thank those who serve, first responders and their families. The annual Carry The Load march will weave through the park pre-concert, with a VIP area for military and service families. The concert will be filmed for live broadcast to armed forces stationed around the world (through Armed Forces Network) and will appear on Memorial Day on WFAA-TV, Channel 8.
