A recent trip to New York with my Houstonian colleagues, style editor Francine Ballard and publisher Monica Bickers, set the mood for spring. We gallivanted around Manhattan from one client meeting to another, inspired by conversations and showroom visits — but prior to meetings, I escaped for a frivolous trip to visit the "Björk" retrospective at MoMA, a must-see for fans of this diminutive Icelandic singer that continues till June 7. On my return to New York this month to attend the annual Fashion Group International Regional Directors Conference, I, of course, plan to visit The Costume Institute's exhibition, "China: Through the Looking Glass" at The Metropolitan Museum of Art — read our style page ode, "Chinese Whispers," on page 17. Smart and beautiful — those two words sum up Jamie O'Banion; read "Beauty, Brains and Bioscience," page 25; while Anna-Sophia van Zweden and her father, Maestro Jaap van Zweden, are featured in "The Making of Soluna," page 20. Take a look at "Branded for Life," in which Michael Cory, the founder of agency BrandCory, opens his elegantly rustic home to our home editor, Rebecca Sherman, page 34. As we close this issue, Dallas is recovering — the last week was the most exciting and the most exhausting schedule ever! Suffice it to say, Dallas Arts Week and Film Festival frenzy will be featured next month. But, hold on, it's not summertime yet. There are still more charitable events to attend this month, and you'll find PaperCity at Booker T. Washington's FlyingHorse performance gala, May 1; The Salvation Army's Doing the Most Good Luncheon and Fashion Show, May 4; Partners Card 2015 Kickoff at Galleria Dallas, May 6; TACA Lexus Party on the Green, May 8; Centerstage by Dallas Theater Center, May 9; and lastly, the inaugural Man & Woman of the Year Award benefitting Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, May 30. Holly Moore and Jim Kastleman's sophisticated, witty magazine filled with luxurious fashion, design and fun had launched in Dallas. I had taken a 12-year sabbatical from advertising sales after my children were born, and seeing PaperCity rekindled my desire to return. A year and a few months later, I did just that and began my journey with PaperCity. It was a whole new world and vocabulary for me, and soon I could tell an Eames from a Saarinen, a Kelly from a Birkin. Evenings that were not spent in the bleachers watching my kids play volleyball, baseball and football were spent at PaperCity client parties with Tom Ford, Zac Posen, Roberto Cavalli, Philippe Starck and Diane von Furstenberg. More impressive and important to me than the famous names, however, are the people I have worked with throughout my years at PaperCity in Houston and Dallas. Some of the names on the masthead have changed over the past 15 years, but the PaperCity bond we share has not. Together, we have experienced joy, stress, weddings, births, a recession and deadlines. There were some tears shared but much more laughter — the kind that makes your face hurt and, on more than one occasion, spit out your margarita (you know who you are). We share pride in our work and great satisfaction when a finished issue comes off the press; the May issue will be my 185th. I have had the privilege of working and forming friendships with clients that are giants in the luxury and marketing industries. They have taught me to appreciate the touch of a fabric, the arch of a chair leg and the light on a canvas. Max Trowbridge stepped (in fabulous shoes) onto the PaperCity stage as Dallas editor in chief almost two years ago, bringing an abundant knowledge of fashion, art and publishing. Not to mention a lovely English accent … She understands the delicate balance of edit and advertising and has been a stunning ambassador for PaperCity. Briana Buxbaum joined our Houston advertising department three years ago; it was quickly apparent that her intelligence and classic style were VPC (Very PaperCity, for those who don't know). Briana was the perfect choice for associate publisher in Dallas when I announced it was time to leave my PaperCity home. All the stars were aligning (Max, Jane, Linden, Briana, Beth, Samantha and Will). I leave feeling fulfilled, gratified and filled with great excitement for the future for PaperCity. This month, the maison introduces its newest timepiece: Clé de Cartier. The name is derived from its key-like crown, but the fait accompli is the fit. Designed with a slight arch, the watch actually bends to the shape of its auspicious owner's wrist. The collection is comprised of yellow, white and rose-gold options with leather-band and diamond variations as well. What a great excuse to be on time. $19,700 to $985,000, at the Cartier boutique.
