MAY | PAGE 37 | 2015 wrestled one to the ground and took his bell. But then I found out that not all the goats have bells, only the leader goats, and that's how the others follow. I had nightmares all night about the goats wandering around lost." The bell now hangs on the French door in his living room and makes for a good story. Handmade gifts from Hope and Walt naturally make the list, along with a bottle of Elmer's glue, a gift from the Starbucks team when he left Seattle, for being the "glue that held the team together." It's framed and displayed in the master bedroom. Other pieces have earned a place at home simply because they're beautiful: a pair of vintage rosewood Eames lounge chairs, a '40s-era George Nelson sideboard, a '30s-era Thonet bench, a set of Cherner dining chairs and a 19th-century Nordic hope chest, among them. The Iowa farm boy who sketched and dreamed for hours has never stopped creating. Last year, Cory and his business partner started a company called Kat&Duke, "a kid's craft brand that makes it easy to construct characters and play environments — rockets, zoos, castles — from discarded boxes," he says. The line launched at Michael's in April and will be at Target and other retailers later this summer. "The goal is to create stories that children will tell years from now. 'Remember when we built that castle with dad out of boxes, and he was the dragon? And he chased us for an hour …' That's a story to remember. No one will tell this story years from now: 'Remember when we stayed inside and played PlayStation all day on that beautiful day …' It's all about the stories we tell." The house's open floor plan is broken up by architectural elements including the custom iron staircase and custom walnut cabinetry in the dining room. The cabinetry also serves as a niche for the refrigerator and storage. The large beams were reclaimed from a gold mine in Colorado. Kitchen stools by BluDot. Cisco Home lighting pendants. Custom concrete tile backsplash. Custom-designed walnut cabinetry and wrought-iron staircase. In the upstairs hallway, custom cabinetry with wrought-iron handles. Vintage chair by John Salterini. Michael Cory with dogs Bishop and Hiro.
