HOMECOMING: ARTIST JOHN ALEXANDER'S BOOK SIGNING AT McCLAIN GALLERY CATHERINE D. ANSPON CANVASES THE SCENE. PHOTOGRAPHY MARITZA RODRIGUEZ. I t was a bright art night at McClain Gallery when New York-based painter John Alexander returned to town for the release of his latest volume documenting works from the last decade, Human/nature. The Ridiculous and the Sublime: Recent Works by John Alexander. The books flew off the shelves that evening, while the faithful turned out to applaud the artist on his exhibition of the same name, which opened the previous week at the Meadows Museum, Southern Methodist University, Dallas, on the occasion of the Meadows' 50th anniversary celebrations and SMU's centennial. Collectors and fellow artists warmly welcomed the Beaumont native and former University of Houston professor. In the crowd: gallery hosts Robert McClain, Erin Siudzinski and Sharon Lott Graham; Bill Wheless admiring canvases and drawings from McClain's accompanying exhibition; Sharon Kopriva, who studied with Alexander at UH (the artist penned a personal tribute in her volume, "To my favorite student"); Sara Dodd; Greg Fourticq Jr.; Shelley Weathers; Karen Desenberg (mom Marilyn Oshman joined the group later at the convivial dinner party that followed at Armandos); Leslie and Brad Bucher; Carolyn and Jimmy Robertson; Elaine and Richard Ellender; Krista and Mike Dumas; Ken Mazzu; Pete Gershon; John de la Cruz and the Glassell's Patrick Palmer; Art Guy Jack Massing with wife Star Massing; Kelly and Nicholas Silvers; Emily Manderson; Leigh and Reggie Smith; Joni and John Ballis; Jessica Younger; long-time pal David Berg (who hosted the painter during his stay); David Kapiloff; painter Michael Collins; artist Karin Broker, who's also in the McClain stable; Polly Bowden; CAMH board chair Bill Goldberg; Ashley Pridmore; and curators Clint Willour of the Galveston Arts Center and the MFAH's Alison de Lima Greene.
