SEPTEMBER | PAGE 78 | 2015 VLADIMIR KAGAN A MOST MODERN AFFAIR WITH ANNE LEE PHILLIPS SETTLES IN ON A SERPENTINE SOFA. PHOTOGRAPHY MARITZA RODRIGUEZ. I n 1952, a young couple hired Vladimir Kagan as interior designer for their home in Great Neck, Long Island. This dining room is featured as a two- page spread in his latest tome, Vladimir Kagan: A Lifetime of Avant-Garde Design (Pointed Leaf Press). The room is classic Kagan, with a floating vitrine suspended from a bronze column, angular table and chairs from the Kagan-Dreyfuss collection and hanging lights from the Finlandia collection. The couple's niece, Ellen Holzberg, was at the front of the line when the master of mid-century modern came to town for a book signing at David Sutherland showroom, hosted by Ann Sutherland, sharing their story with him. (Kagan remembered her aunt and uncle, some of his early clients.) They were in good company, as his celebrity clientele included Marilyn Monroe, Gary Cooper and The Walt Disney Company. Today, his original mid-century modern pieces are coveted items among collectors, Tom Ford included, who in the late '90s ordered 360 of Kagan's sensuous Omnibus sofas for Gucci stores worldwide. Ford also wrote the preface to the book. In a dynamic comeback, the octogenarian is producing a collection of his most iconic furnishings exclusively for David Sutherland Showrooms in Houston and Dallas. The affable and dapper designer was in good spirits, laughing with Ann Sutherland and sharing stories with each admirer before artfully branding their books. Modern mavens: Mark Minichiello, in from NY with Kagan; David Sutherland's Cayla Atha, Marjorie Partin, and Susan Elias; Found's Ruth Davis; Weidner Hasou's Genna Weidner; Carl Moore's Geoffrey Westergaard; and designers Barbara Hill, Janet Gust, and Erin Williamson, in from Austin.
