H ouston Antiques + Art + Design Show, the first of a trilogy of fairs that define the fall, leads off this month with a surprising new location — one with an industrial edge: Silver Street Studios, sited in the heart of the Washington Avenue Arts District. Also novel this year, the reborn Show (formerly HADA, where Miss Ima Hogg and the Mastersons shopped for treasures to fill their homes, Bayou Bend and Rienzi, respectively) adds a polished Preview Party. At press time, HAADS is nearing 40 well-edited dealers, from Houston stalwarts to purveyors from Paris, Panama, and Uruguay. Antiquarians from the East Coast, L.A., Atlanta, Palm Springs, and the mid-South also bring their mix of coveted wares spanning centuries and styles. CHIPPENDALE MEETS MODERNISM S ince acquiring the show in 2014, Dolphin Promotions — a respected presenter of antique shows around the country, led off by the flagship Palm Springs Modernism — has taken a broader view of antiques shopping and collecting, expanding the time periods encompassed by HAADS. While the fair still bows to the grandeur of 18th-century American and European epochs, especially Queen Anne and Chippendale, you'll find plenty of Victorian-era goodies, Asian offerings from glorious eras such as Japan's Edo period, the flourishes of Art Nouveau, and clean lines of Art Deco, joined now by the timelessness of modernism and the mid-century. HAADS increasingly reaches out to the design community so antiques can be incorporated into contemporary interiors as prized objects in a dialogue with today (rather than a slavish interpretation of 1730s Philadelphia). Fine and decorative art are also showcased: furniture, charming smalls, historic canvases, estate jewels, porcelain, pottery, rare volumes, vintage fashion, lighting, sculpture, and sterling silver. How to navigate it all? Houston dealers offer a good starting point. Confirmed to date from our area are Antiques of River Oaks (check out the droll billiards-table-shaped letter box, circa 1890); English Surrey Antiques; The Antique Company; Atelier 1505; Golden Chances Antiques; Gulf Coast Silver (sumptuous sterling from storied makers); Houston Junior Forum; David Lackey Antiques & Art of Antiques Roadshow renown; and Majolica LLC, which has a Paris outpost. Also recommended: Alan Barnes Fine Art, in from Dallas — his family-owned gallery dates back to London in the mid- 19th century; Art Link International of Lake Worth, Florida, bringing a classic Cortès; Really Good LLC, with Panamanian, museum-quality baskets mixed with exotic- skin handbags and belts; curated costume jewelry and Mexican silver from The Lush Life of Dallas; and Douglas W. Morse Antiques & Fine Art of Pasadena, California, whose Japanese screen from Charlton Heston's estate was a showstopper at this spring's HAADS. And, just outside the HAADS entry door is Dwell magazine's Monogram Modern Home, on tour to just six cities this fall. The 525-square-foot house will feature interiors by Houston architect Shane Cook to source local goods, as well as the newest Monogram luxury appliances to touch and test.
