W hat better setting for the book signing of a preser- vationist designer than Ruth Gay's architectural antiques-haven Chateau Domingue. Charleston-based designer Amelia Handegan touched down for an evening of cocktails to celebrate her new tome Rooms (Rizzoli). The book catalogs her many projects creating gracious Southern homes, including her work on the 18th-cen- tury Rose Hill Estate in Virginia. Toasting tradition: Colby Goetschius, Mary Evans McCloskey, Shelby Poortvliet Beeching, Grace Weatherly, Suzanne Duin, Devon Liedtke, Jane Moore, and David Shaw. On the opposite scale of the design spec- trum, funky-fresh Cortney and Robert Novogratz, stars of HGTV's Home by Novogratz, chatted with artists, design- ers, and fans in the new gallery space at Houston Arts Alliance as part of the Houston Creative Economy Salon series. In a city known for its oil-and-gas and medical professions, an impressive part of the work force is made up of 189,000 creatives. The Novogratzes — an adorable married couple with seven children and a flourishing design business that includes furniture, bedding, and bath collections — shared their unique career path and signed copies of their latest book, Beachside Bohemian: Easy Living by the Sea (Rizzoli). As Robert said, "If you can make a living doing what you love, then you've got it made." After the talk, the family-oriented Cortney made a beeline for her cousin, who lives in Houston.
