Told from the viewpoint of its most noteworthy (and occasionally notorious) citizens — you have to be deceased to make the cut — the digitized Handbook of Houston launches Thursday, March 2, timed to the 121st annual meeting of the Texas State Historical Association in Houston. The TSHA is one of the funders of the free handbook, along with Houston Endowment and Houston History Alliance. The History Alliance has enlisted Lindsay Scovil Dove — a tap-dancing veteran of local music theater as well as a historian wielding an MA in Public History from the University of Houston — as editor of the ambitious, ongoing project eight years in the making. When it goes live, the Handbook will have 1,500 entries (posted by vetted volunteers), made more compelling by many never-before-seen images culled from archives as diverse as the Library of Congress and UH's Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management. Among our fave discoveries are chapters detailing tenor sax man Illinois Jacquet, the fabled Shamrock Hilton, and the role our town played in the women's movement and the crusade for gay rights, vis-à-vis the National Women's Conference at Sam Houston Coliseum and a protest against anti-gay performer Anita Bryant's appearance at the Hyatt downtown, both occurring in 1977 and milestones in American history. houstonhistoryalliance. org.
