10 S ince I am no longer watching CNN — or any news show, for that matter — I have more time to research ... or to follow threads from one blog to another. I'm fairly obsessed with L.A. designer Mark D. Sikes' blog of pretty pictures — stripes, big white houses, Bunny Mellon, blue and white bedrooms, Hubert de Givenchy's gardens. I also love Mark's MDS Stripes collection of breezy, Nantucket-y tops, skirts, and dresses in cotton stripes and ruffles. Mark will be in Houston next month for Texas Design Week and is a judge for this years PaperCity Design Awards. Speaking of Texas Design Week … what a journey this has been. Alton LaDay, whose clients are mostly in the interior design trade, frequents the big design fairs: Legends in L.A., Southern Style Now, High Point. One day, he said out loud, "Why doesn't Houston have a design fair?" So, here you go: Sunday through Friday, May 14 through 19, with PaperCity Design Awards celebration as the official kickoff on Monday, May 15, in a spectacular venue in West Avenue. All designers and architects: If you haven't entered the PaperCity Design Awards yet, you have until Sunday night, April 16. Go to Alton made this design fair happen, and we are thrilled to be a partner. For more details on who is coming in and where to be, see pages 66 and 67, and visit for continuous updates. In other design news this month: L.A. author and designer David Netto will be at Decorative Center Houston Spring Market Wednesday, April 19, along with other speakers (page 20); Christopher Spitzmiller is at Found Thursday, April 13; and Hakkasan Group's new Michelin-starred Chinese dim sum restaurant Yauatcha, adjacent to The Webster at the Galleria, has opened, and the interiors are spectacular. A full reveal is in our May issue. I'll leave you with one of my favorite design — and life — credos, from the late, great Vogue art director Alexander Liberman: "Go for the top, go for the bottom, never muck around in the middle."
