and American blue bloods. The product of an elite French military family and French board- ing schools, Catroux is a self-taught designer whose early good taste was sparked by visits with his grand- father to the Paris homes of the Rothschilds and the Dreyfuses. In the 1960s, when he was in his 20s, Catroux was introduced stateside to such arbiters of style as Babe Paley, Cole Porter, and Billy Baldwin. He helicoptered to the Mount Kisco home of Pamela Hayward (née Churchill, and the future Mrs. Harriman), and spent weekends with architect Philip Johnson at his iconic Glass House in New Canaan. Catroux's clients, many of whom have museum-worthy art collections, don't hire him to provide a certain look; they merely expect the best, and he delivers, whether it's a $750,000 custom sofa with gold filigree or a $1 million Jean-Michel Frank writ- ing desk. Catroux's are often repeat customers — Von Furstenberg, who wrote the book's introduction, has hired him for multiple projects across the globe, including her Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired Los Angeles home. Billionaire Leslie Wexner has tapped him for a fleet of private jets over the decades — so many, in fact, that Catroux has lost count, although he thinks it's at least 10. Despite his obvious design brilliance, Catroux is highly sought by his patrician clients for perhaps one quality something most designers can't offer: He's one of them.
