52 FRESH AND FIERCE DE GOURNAY London wallpaper company de Gournay has added fresh opulent papers to its collection of hand-painted, made-to-order panels. Playing off historic chinoiserie designs for which the company is well known, de Gournay's Shanghai artisans are employing new techniques — silk embroidery, bas-relief, hand-gilded feathering, and a painterly Van Gogh effect. Other introductions include spare geometric and Art Deco patterns, many in sumptuous silver and gold leaf, as well as linen and silk sheer fabrics. This influx of contemporary energy comes by way of 30-something Hannah Cecil Gurney, daughter of de Gournay founder Claud Cecil Gurney. Since Hannah joined the family business two years ago as business development director,, showrooms have opened in New York, Paris, Shanghai, and Beijing, and the 31-year-old company has collaborated with Chanel, Christian Dior, and contemporary designers Jenny Packham, Adam Lippes, and Matthew Williamson. De Gournay papers, to the trade at Culp Associates, Dallas Design Center, 1025 N. Stemmons Freeway, Suite 500, culpassociates.com. LACROIX THEATRICS Christian Lacroix's new wallpaper and fabric collection, Au Théâtre ce Soir takes inspiration from Europe's posh stage sets. Imagine the opulent Grand Turk's parlor in Molière's comédie-ballet Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme; the decadent boudoir in Colette's Chéri; and the bountiful fairy banquet from Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. The sumptuous collection of digitally printed fabrics, luxurious weaves, voiles, and embroideries comes in floral and harlequin patterns, palm motifs, exotic foliage toiles, and Lacroix's classic Paseo design. The densely cut velvet, digitally printed with a kaleidoscopic mix of the fashion house's famous patterns, creates a stained-glass effect. Appropriately, the collection was photographed west of Paris at the 1815 Château de Groussay, one of France's most iconic decorative palaces.
