W hen Dr. Agustín Arteaga took the stage at the Dallas Museum of Art's annual Art Ball, little did he know he would make a prediction. "I still haven't mastered y'all," said Arteaga, a Mexico native who assumed the DMA's directorship last September. "But I am looking forward to a Texas-sized surprise tonight." That surprise came near evening's end: The live auction raised a record-breaking $460,000 — the largest-grossing live auction in Art Ball's 52-year history, contributing to the $1.3 million raised that night. Art Ball's success was largely the handi- work of chair Ann Hobson, whose goal was to lead a mighty fund-raiser — with help from her husband, Lee Hobson — that was smaller and smarter but spared no elegance. "Everything about tonight is really all Ann," said DMA board chairman Melissa Fetter. "But, Lee, we're glad you're here riding on her coattails." Hers were chic coattails, indeed, as Ann was stunning in a Carolina Herrera gown.
