28 STATE OF ART AFFAIRS WE LOVE AN EXCUSE TO SURROUND OURSELVES WITH CREATIVE TYPES. HERE, WE TAKE A LOOK BACK AT THE CITY'S TOP ART EVENTS IN APRIL — DALLAS ARTS MONTH. By Jane Rozelle and Catherine D. Anspon. Photography Daniel Driensky, Yesi Sukilynn Fortuna, Rhi Lee. I t's a moment to celebrate!" said Dallas Art Fair co- founder John Sughrue as he toasted the beginning of the frenzied calendar at the Neiman Marcus Downtown kick off for the Dallas Art Fair. Joined by co-founder Chris Byrne, Fair director Kelly Cornell, head of exhibitor relations Brandon Kennedy, and John's wife Marlene Sughrue, who oversees marketing, the crowd girded themselves with cocktails and art gazing. Also in attendance: NM's Jeff Byron, Ginger Reeder, Kevin Hurst, Mimi Sterling, and Chuck Steelman. Two weeks later, we settled in at Fashion Industry Gallery for a whirlwind of Fair-fêting. The activity began Thursday morning at F.I.G. with the DAF Brunch, where a record crowd of curators and collectors took their fi rst-depth look at the two stories of art offerings. Top players: Nasher Sculpture Center director Jeremy Strick, Dallas Museum of Art director Agustín Arteaga, and DMA Hoffman Family senior curator of contemporary art Gavin Delahunty, Mayor Mike Rawlings and wife Micki. The Preview Gala that night gave luminaries a chance to buy before the Fair opened to the public. Late night theatrics took place at Mirador at Forty Five Ten on Main, where Forty Five Ten president and co-founder Brian Bolke, along with Headington Companies' Tim Headington, collector John Runyon and Lehmann Maupin gallery's David Maupin hosted German photographer Juergen Teller. The artist, whose massive photographs hang in Mirador's dining room, signed copies of the book bearing his works, Eating at Hotel Il Pellicano. The next morning, art folk jump- started their day in the Design District with the Billy Childish exhibition breakfast at The Goss-Michael Foundation, where Kenny Goss and Joyce Goss sustained the art troops — including heavy-hitter Elisabeth Karpidas of The Karpidas Collection — with tacos and a viewing of the Brit-talent's disarming naïve-style canvases.
