8 letter editor HUNT SLONEM O ur Dallas editor, Christina Geyer, wrote the most wonderful analogy of summer travel, Holiday magazine, and PaperCity in her Dallas editor's letter, which, with her permission, I am excerpting here: From 1946 to 1977, a little American travel magazine called Holiday was all the rage — in my mind, it's still one of the smartest publications to have ever graced newsstands. John Steinbeck wrote about Sag Harbor. Truman Capote penned an essay on Brooklyn. Jack Kerouac waxed poetic about Manhattan's beatniks. And Slim Aarons photographed Eleuthera in one issue — and those "glittering socialites" in another. There was something radically indulgent about a magazine so international — connected, current, cool — during a time when the world was decidedly more insulated than ours is today. It's motto? "Holiday is not an organ of the intellectuals. Holiday is a magazine of civilized entertainment. It aims at satisfying and spurring the leisure-time interests of a sizable number of moderately well-heeled Americans. It is wedded to no doctrine except that of making propaganda for the politer pleasures of our time." I like to think this July/August issue is PaperCity's version of that. Do you not love Holiday's credo? It's similar to what I've always felt PaperCity's ethos to be: a smart look at the joys of design, art, fashion, travel, and food. Our delivery van used to have emblazoned on the sides "Not political. Not critical. Just fun." Maybe they still do. I hope so. I'll have to go down to the garage and take a look. For summer wandering, our focus on Mexico City came about due to PaperCity creative director Michelle Aviña's passion for this remarkable city — her hometown — and her knowledge of its intricacies, architectural treasures, and deep connection to art. Read and enjoy, beginning on page 44. You'll be packing your bags before you get to the end. In our Art + Decoration section, one of our favorite design/archi- tectural firms, Bodron + Fruit (Mil Bodron and Svend Fruit) has completed another sensitive renovation of an architecturally significant home. This one, in Dallas, is for art collectors Sharon and Michael Young, page 66. Bodron + Fruit also restored one of the important Philip Johnson-designed homes, Beck House, also in Dallas. More on this home this fall. We also visit with Caroline Harper Knapp, author of the blog House of Harper. She's one smart woman entrepreneur. As we wrap this double-month issue for July/August — our only double issue of the year — I pack for Venice to join Becca Cason Thrash's merry band of travelers from around the U.S. and the world, for her fourth (and she swears final) soirée to benefit American and International Friends of the Louvre and Venetian Heritage. Details online in the coming days and in the September issue. Happy summer travels! Partake in civilized entertainment, and read some propaganda for the politer pleasures of our time. Save War and Peace for fall. Holly Moore Editor-in-Chief holly@papercitymag.com
