162 COCKTAILS COMPOUND AT THE Anne Lee Phillips dons her Luccheses. Photography Mary Hoang-Do. W hen it's sugarcane time • Long round about June • I'll be walking with Sugar • 'Neath that old sugar moon." The sweet country-jazz sounds from Austin-based Danielle Reich Trio slid along the green lawns and wrapped the charming barns of The Compound before evaporating into the star-speckled sky. The mood was bright and festive among the 200-plus Round Top locals and antiques- fair visitors at the party celebrating the fourth edition of PaperCity's Round Top special section, hosted by Round Top unofficial mayor Mark Massey at The Compound, his beautifully designed special-event venue that sits along Highway 237 in the heart of antiques country. After a long day treasure hunting among the 57 acres of fields, tents, and barns (most of The Compound is air- conditioned!), there's nothing better than catching up with old and newfound friends over al fresco cocktails — the Deep Eddy Vodka spicy margarita and Texas greyhound (vodka, ruby red grapefruit, elderflower and lime) were big hits. Cherry Pie Hospitality's Lee Ellis and State Fare executive chef Jim Mills served up Texas classics — fried chicken and lamb tacos, and pimento-cheese spread that arguably surpasses the Masters' famous version.
