S itting for a portrait by photographer Annie Leibovitz means you've unofficially become an icon. The subjects of her portraits range from heads of state and business leaders to pop stars, artists, and social activists. During any pivotal moment in culture, Leibovitz has been there to capture it: Caitlyn Jenner in a corset, sitting cross-legged in Malibu; Barack Obama gazing out a window in the Oval Office on his last day as President of the United States; Kim Kardashian holding daughter North West as husband Kanye West, in the background, takes their photo with an iPad. Come Tuesday, November 14, 26 the master photographer speaks as part of the Dallas Museum of Art's Arts and Letters Live series. Held at McFarlin Memorial Auditorium at Southern Methodist University, the lecture will focus on Leibovitz's legendary career working for Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, and Vogue, with particular attention paid to her new book, Annie Leibovitz: Portraits 2005- 2016 (Phaidon). Located in a dedicated gallery space in the Level One luxury corridor between Burberry and Louis Vuitton, the exhibition recalls publishing's heyday, when editors and art directors tapped the world's foremost creative visionaries and artists to interpret fashion and culture through their own lenses. The exhibition includes photographs by Man Ray, Diane Arbus, Toni Frissell, Andy Warhol, Salvador Dalí, and Cindy Sherman. Viewing them affirms what we've known all along: Fashion magazines have always been about so much more than the shirt on your back. The Art of Bazaar, NorthPark Center, through November 20.
