SPECIAL SECTION WRITTEN BY LISA COLLINS SHADDOCK And the Award Goes to … 46 T he hundreds of outstanding design projects submitted for year three of the Dallas PaperCity Design Awards with Dunhill Partners and Dallas Design District were a testament to the tremendous pool of talent that thrives within our city. Therefore, it was fitting that this year's Bill Hutchinson Award paid tribute to a man who contributed so much to making Dallas what it is today: the late architect Frank D. Welch. Bentley Tibbs accepted the posthumous award on his mentor's behalf, along with his long-time assistant, Rita Godfrey; Tibbs said he learned the most he'll ever learn about THE WINNING ENTRIES FOR THE 2017 DALLAS PAPERCITY DESIGN AWARDS WITH DUNHILL PARTNERS AND DALLAS DESIGN DISTRICT architecture studying under and working beside Welch. His inspiring acceptance speech was the perfect precursor for the presentation of this year's winning entries — all quite inspirational themselves. Our panel of judges — designers Vicente Wolf, Alexa Hampton, and Victoria Hagan, and architect Lauren Rottet (see more about the judges on page 47) — sifted through more than 2,000 images to determine the winning entries, in 16 categories — all outstanding examples of design in Dallas. Designer and author Carl Dellatore (Interior Design Master Class: 100 Lessons from America's Finest Designers on the Art of Decoration, Rizzoli) served as master of ceremonies.
