PaperCity co-owner and editor in chief Holly Moore welcomed guests and kicked off the awards by honoring the late architect Frank Welch with the Bill Hutchinson Award for his impact on the Texas design community. Welch's protégé Bentley Tibbs and longtime assistant Rita Godfrey accepted the award on his behalf in a sentimental tribute that few will soon forget. Of course, it wouldn't be the Dallas PaperCity Design Awards without remarks from Hutchinson — and his traditional madcap jokes, which have become a staple of the awards night. King Huchinson, his young son, joined his dad on stage with a few crowd-pleasing knock-knock jokes of his own. On to the reason for the evening: designer and author Carl Dellatore (Interior Design Master Class: 100 Lessons from America's Finest Designers on the Art of Decoration, Rizzoli) was in from New York for a panel discussion the next day with Alexa Hampton and Vicente Wolf, and took to the stage to an- nounce the winning entries. See pages 48 to 56 for the projects. As the after-party revved up, one out-of-the-ordinary event was on everyone's mind: the fi nal game of the World Series, starring the Houston Astros vs. the L.A. Dodgers — fi rst ball in 10 minutes! So, as DJ Blake Ward tuned up, the play-off game appeared on the big screen. Wines from Duchman Family Winery, cocktails shaken with Tito's Handmade Vodka, and passed Italian bites from Lombardi's Catering kept the party fueled well into the evening — for both those in the after-party lounge and the group glued to the World Series. For both there was much to celebrate: 16 winning design projects to toast, and the Astros win in the World Series. We'll call that a homerun of an evening.
