LA DIARIES O ur day begins a t S q i r l , J e s s i c a K o s l o w ' s b r u n c h restaurant i n S i l v e r Lake. Sqirl is, among other things, famous for making carbs popular again. This classic L.A. breakfast spot has plenty of healthy greens and good service, with everything made in-house, from jams and jellies to nut butters, almond milk, and yogurt to breads and brioches. We m a y h a v e ordered one of everything. An overwhelming f e a s t o f b r e a k f a s t goodness fills our two small s i d e w a l k t a b l e s . Favorites are the crispy rice salad, slabs of the thickest bacon you've seen in your life, giant slices of brioche topped with house-made jam, and buckwheat-and-cactus- flour pancakes. For drinks, the homemade horchata and almond latte are fantastic. From Silver Lake, it's a short jump to Echo Park, the colorful, largely Latino neighborhood with Downtown L.A. as a backdrop. The mix of Latin flavor and hipster-ness is what makes this such a cool place. We sample food at Triniti and Honey Hi, both located on the same block, offering what might be thought of as "L.A. food." Triniti's menu changes daily, based o n w h a t ' s fresh. While the options are few, what's a v a i l a b l e is perfectly prepared and worth a visit. Honey Hi, just a few steps away, serves m u c h o f t h e same, mostly ( b u t n o t exclusively) vegan. We break away from veggies to try their lambwich, a combo of grass- f e d l a m b a n d beef with halloumi cheese, while friend Chris Hancock has the Indian kachari bowl, which includes brown rice, cauliflower, mung beans, fennel, spices a n d f r e s h herbs. Both are amazing. We also try the avocado toast, which i s r a n k e d among the best in the city by The N e w Yo r k Times and Los Angeles Times. It's time to walk off some of the goodness. We head downtown to MOCA to see the amazing p h o t o g r a p h y e x h i b i t i o n "Real Worlds: Brassaï, Arbus, Goldin." While MOCA is always worth a visit, this exhibition puts three of the 20th century's most i n f l u e n t i a l photographers in one room. More than 100 works, drawn primarily from MOCA's i m m e n s e c o l l e c t i o n o f photography, take you back through time to see the world though the artist's lens. The exhibited works focus on those who live on the fringes of society and offer an intimate view into a segment of the population that is often overlooked. The images give us a glimpse into how these people lived their lives through depictions of prostitutes, lovers, and their friends. You should know that MOCA offers free tours of the permanent and current exhibitions on Thursday evenings, as well as a noon and 2:30 pm tour on Saturday and Sunday. The tour is well worth your time — and a great way to get a new perspective and background of the works on view. WHAT COULD BE MORE FITTING FOR TWO CREATIVES' L.A.
