PAPERCITY DESIGN AWARDS AND TEXAS DESIGN WEEK HOUSTON 2019 T he Pattern and Decoration movement marked its 40 th anniversary this year, so the timing of Chicago artist Judy Ledgerwood's show at Barbara Davis Gallery is particularly synchronistic. The Northwestern University professor, fresh off an installation for the Art Institute of Chicago, returns to Houston for a third solo at the gallery — with some of her strongest painting yet. The canvases, influenced by textiles and quilting (a tradition in Ledgerwood's family), feature quatrefoils, distorted diamonds, and forms that resemble God's eyes, irregularly shaped and bearing skeins of drips. The resulting composition destroys the grid and the order of P&D in favor of something far more interesting. In a recent interview for Hyperallergic, the artist said, "Perfection is boring, because perfection is absolutely predictable. I'm striving for a sense of ease, and a sense of grace, that conveys … humanity." What is constant is color, as the painter employs — in often monumentally scaled canvases — her signature palette of rich plums and purple, jutting up against diamonds of fuchsia, gold, chartreuse, and turquoise. It's all so post-modern, third-wave feminism, and pushing past Matisse.
