16 DIVE INTO OUR DIGITAL WORLD PAPERCITYMAG.COM MODERN HISTORY A historic hotel and gleaming 34-story high-rise may not appear to be a good match, but that's exactly what one of Houston's most intriguing new developments is merging. "In many ways, it's not a straightforward project, marrying a 1923 home with contemporary building architecture," Houston interior designer Lauren Rottet tells PaperCity. So she and architect Jorge Munoz dreamed up unconventional ways to make it work, including an art gallery corridor and outdoor plaza. A 3-D art installation will add more wows to a glass space meant to make you pause. Read more at papercitymag.com/la-colombe-dor. J.LO'S CHALLENGE HOUSTON AFTER DARK NO BEACH BUMS Jennifer Lopez's 10-day diet challenge is all the rage. But what happens when a society scribe attempts to cut all sugar and carbs from her own diet? PaperCity's Shelby Hodge took the challenge that has JLo and her beau, Alex Rodriguez — who hardly need a weight loss regimen — crowing. "I was as religious as a nun the fi rst fi ve days… By day six, I was slipping like a sinner on a fast boat to hell," Shelby notes. Get all the details — what worked and what didn't (so many eggs) — in this report from the party front lines. Read more at papercitymag.com/jlo-diet. Legitimate restaurants — not just fast food and diner fare — are now open till midnight or later, as the Bayou City continues its cosmopolitan transformation. Nancy's Hustle, the EaDo hot spot from chef Jason Vaughan that's received national praise from Esquire, the Boston Globe, and Thrillist, is all in on the trend. New York transplant Benjamin Berg is another late night believer. Berg's new B.B. Lemon is built around the idea that it's the perfect place to sit down at one of its checkered tablecloths at 1 am. The fact that it became big news when the water in Galveston was actually blue for a stretch probably helps explain that. But Texas still boasts some underrated beach retreats. Rockport's remarkable recovery from the utter devastation it suffered through Hurricane Harvey is just part of the story. There's also the scene around Matagorda Island Lighthouse, which dates back to 1852. PaperCity's Annie Gallay takes you on a tour of some underappreciated parts of the Lone Star State.
